With that said, let us introduce you to the nuts and bolts of responsive web design, and explain why you need it!
Responsive Web Design, also known as RWD, refers to the process of crafting a site/blog in such a way that it will be optimised for viewing on any device. This includes wide LCD screens, desktop monitors, tablets and mobile phones. In other words, websites that are responsive will adapt themselves to any environment. This will enhance user experience by providing easy reading and navigating, with minimal panning, resizing or scrolling.
Websites that are responsive use CSS3 media queries - an extension of media rules - that allow the website to adapt itself to its viewing environment. Media queries decide which CSS style the website must use based upon the device the blog/site is being displayed upon, or the width of the browser. Responsive web design is based on the fluid grid concept where each page element is sized up using relative units (like percentage and ems), as opposed to fixed units like pixels or points. Like the content, images are also resized into relative units so that they don't display outside their containing element.
There are several reasons why people are opting to make their site/blog...responsive!
As web developers have finally given a custom solution for every type of mobile device, responsive web design only helps to increase user experience.
Responsive web design will automatically fit any screen size!
A responsive web design automatically adapts itself to the device's screen size and orientation. It doesn't matter if the device has a large, small, landscape, or even portrait orientation, it readily switches to the right size ... in the blink of an eye!
Responsive web designs are accommodating!
The adaptive layouts of responsive design will readily fit any device being used to view it. For example, on a desktop screen, the top menu becomes large and wide, which is easy to read. The same menu on a mobile device transforms itself into a sub-menu, simplifying the layout for smaller screens as well.
Content control over several devices
Responsive design lets you take control of how content will display on different devices. For example, on a desktop computer the design may display eight recent blog posts along with an image and excerpt, whilst on a mobile phone only four of the latest blog posts are displayed.
Responsive web designs are search engine friendly!
The easy to index structure of the responsive web design make it extremely SEO-friendly.
